Shopping on the Internet should be safe but there are always some risks that you should be aware of. First of all, there is the agreement when making a purchase with an online merchant. Price and freight/shipping are one thing but what if the item is broken or doesn’t live up to the standard you had hoped for? Will the merchant take the product back? Is the merchant store safe and do they follow the rules asset by the law?
Keep track, but there are some small things you can do. First of all, you can use virus protection software. This software will normally protect you from most of the harmful things you can find on the Internet, such as viruses and malware, but they will also provide you with information pertaining to the website you are visiting, and whether it is safe or not. Equally, when making a purchase, the final page where you type in your credit card information or other payment information should be on a page that has ‘HTTPS://’in the URL. Look at the ‘S’. A normal page doesn’t contain an ‘S’, which stands for ‘secure.’ This means the page is encrypted, created for secure payments or to protect login information. If a merchant doesn’t have this ‘S’ in their address when making a purchase, then be very careful. NOTE: You will normally only find this on purchase pages, not when you are browsing or simply looking for products.
Have you tried to search the merchant’s name? Often, when a merchant is not serious, people get angry and will write about the store on blogs or forums. These can easily be found by doing a Google / Bing search.
Last, but certainly not least, nothing is free! People don’t give you a new iPhone for free and you will not get a new notebook if you click 1000 times on x number of links and no, no one on the level will contact you to help them move$10 million in exchange for $500 and your signature on some documents. The Internet truly is a fantastic place, but be aware and use common sense. When something sounds too good to be true, it usually is and you should stay away. Be safe and enjoy your online shopping.
